What to Know

Critics Consensus

Gremlins 2 trades the spiky thrills of its predecessor for looney satire, yielding a succession of sporadically clever gags that add some flavor to a recycled plot.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune 'Gremlins 2'' is sloppy and inconsistent, just as it needs to be -- its bumptious, adolescent humor would wilt away if it were subjected to craftsmanship and mature reflection. No N This is a strong contender for the worst movie I've ever seen. Stupid gag after stupid gag after stupid gag. Appeared to be written by five-year-old boys for five-year-old boys, while not being appropriate for children. I enjoyed the original Gremlins film. This one was just incredibly stupid and annoying with virtually no redeeming qualities. I'm surprised so many actors agreed to be a part of it. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Ethan G Unapologetically violent and silly, "Gremlins 2" adds an unexpectedly creative and funny layer to a premise that could have easily lost its footing. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Mason M So everyone hates his movie? and I don't?! Do I really need to explain why this film is good besides brain gremlin because really if the first one was good then this was the best one in my opinion Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Julian S Chock-full of clever references, nods to pop culture, and plenty of campy humor, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” proves to be way smarter than a sequel needs to be. It’s just a total blast. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Patrick S Joe Dante! 8 of 10!! I like this zany sequel, better than first movie. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Audience Member The first Gremlins was a parody/homage to classic Sci-Fi/Monster movies. This time, director Joe Dante looks to parody his own creation, and gives in completely to his love of Looney Tunes, making essentially a live action, off the wall, cartoon spoof of Gremlins. To say Gremlins 2 doesn't take itself seriously would be an understatement, as at one point it even mocks its own premise and on another occasion breaks the “fourth wall”. However, amidst all the chaos and insanity, Gremlins 2 manages to be very entertaining. Just don't expect the original.
